Admission to the Graduate Program

Students who are committed to study in one of the four subdisciplines of the Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics graduate program can apply directly through the ApplyYourself application system. Students are admitted through the first-year program in Molecular, Cellular and Structural Biology.

Application deadline

December 1. Entering students begin in the Fall semester. Spring semester admission is not offered. The program only offers a Ph.D. degree.  M.S. degree is not offered. A decision on your application will be e-mailed to you after your application has been carefully reviewed by the admission committee.

Admission criteria

The program is sufficiently flexible to accommodate students with a wide range of backgrounds. Recommended academic preparation includes one year each of calculus, organic chemistry, and physics, and background in basic biology, including biochemistry. Laboratory research experience is important. We strongly encourage applicants to provide letters of recommendation from supervisors of laboratory work.

Test Scores from Graduate Record Examination (GRE) are required. International students that have not received an undergraduate degree from a U.S. institution must also submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. Review Frequently Asked Questions for recommended scores and department codes.

Financial aid

All BMBB students in good standing are supported financially with a stipend for living expenses plus tuition and most fees. Completion of financial aid forms is not necessary, even though the Graduate School Bulletin lists these forms as being available.
