Fellowship opportunities

There are a large number of fellowships and funding opportunities available to students in the EEB Graduate Program. The ones that are most likely to be relevant for graduate students in EEB are listed below. In most cases, a web link is provided and, if known, this year's or last year's deadline is supplied. Deadlines change from year to year, so check early enough if you are interested in a particular fellowship. Students are strongly encouraged to apply to funding opportunities for which they are eligible for. Grant applications to agencies outside the University of Minnesota that carry research funds typically need to be approved by the Office of Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA). SPA needs about one week to process your grant, which you need to take into account to meet deadlines.

We guarantee five years of support for all Ph.D. students in good standing.  This support is typically a combination of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships. In addition, students are actively encouraged to seek outside funding through extramural grants and fellowships.

Outstanding applicants to the program may be nominated for a CBS Excellence Fellowship.  Recipients of the fellowship for the 2015-2016 academic year (12 months)  receive a stipend of $30,000, plus full tuition (14 credits), summer support, and comprehensive health insurance and dental care.  In addition, final-year Ph.D. candidates who are making outstanding and timely progress towards their degree may be nominated by the program for Graduate School Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship. Nomination deadline is in February for the 2015-16 academic year.  Fellowship recipients this year receive a stipend of $22,500 for the academic year plus full tuition for thesis credits and comprehensive health insurance and dental insurance. Students should consult with their advisors and inform the Director of Graduate Studies by early December if they wish to be nominated. Since the number of nominations is limited, an internal competition will decide which students will be nominated.

The University of Minnesota maintains a web site that lists grant and scholarship resources, including federal grants, grants for international students and a variety of University of Minnesota grants.

The Graduate School has a scholarship Web site that lists grants and scholarships for graduate students at the University of Minnesota. This list includes Endowed Fellowships that are supported by endowed income from wills, trusts, and gifts from organizations or individuals. Applications for endowed fellowships are available on the Graduate School's website for the 2015-16 academic year. Recipients are expected to register in the Graduate School during the tenure of the award. (Deadline: December 1)
