Genome: a course where students explore variants in their own genome sequence

February 26, 2014
3-4pm
STSS 512B

This seminar will describe Dr. David Matthes's experience integrating students' own genome variants (determined by 23&Me) into a freshman seminar on the personal genomics. The discussion will include an overview of student learning objectives, course design, resolution to some of the particular issues raised by working with such sensitive information and what the students did and produced in the course. Dr. Matthes will also provide his sense for how effectively it fulfilled the institutional objectives for freshman seminars and his own desire to create a transformative experience for CBS freshmen by engaging their natural interests and making connections between biology and the human condition more broadly.
