Describe something interesting or unusual about your work here?

I think the most interesting part of my job is helping new faculty joining this great University — from the time they interview to when they move in and get their first grant — this is what really makes me smile. Also, I think it is an honor to work with the intelligent and caring people we have in the departments and college. Every day isan adventure, and that’s what makes it a great place to work. “Go Gophers!”

What’s it like being a collegiate hockey dad?

So, here’s my chance to be a proud dad, right? First of all my daughter Nicole plays for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. She plays defense and has had regular playing time since her freshman year. She received all-conference honorable mention her sophomore and junior years, and has received academic awards from the coaches’ association and the conference the past two years. She will be a senior this fall.

College hockey is much different than high school or youth hockey. The student athletes have to put in much more effort than I thought. They have work-out schedules to follow six days a week during the summer months; the pre-season starts at Point in early September, and the season runs from late October through early March. It is fun to watch the games. They usually have a Friday-Saturday series every weekend and, so far, my wife and I have made it to every game.

I admire how Nicole can manage being a full-time honors student and pursue her love of hockey. When it ends, it will leave a void in my life, but it has been a great ride. Nicole is pursuing a coaching minor and intends to coach hockey, so I will still be able to yell at the referees; however, I suppose I will have to stop questioning the coach’s decisions.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love hockey so in addition to watching Nicole play I go to Wild and Gopher hockey games. I also like to watch most sports. I like to garden, take family trips and play golf. I like to be outside as much as possible.
