CBS Peer Advisor

Job Summary

The primary duties of peer advisors are to assist students with basic advising questions, and serve as a resource to connect CBS students with the CBS Student Services office and general campus resources. CBS Peer advisors will assist students throughout their first year and beyond by supporting Orientation in the summer, followed by working in a weekly, e-advising capacity answering common student questions related to registration, course planning, campus advising and registration tools, as well as preparation for appointments with professional advisors.  Interactions with students will be both in person and on-line.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the implementation of student orientation/registration activities
  • Assist students with preparation of semester academic plans utilizing Graduation Planner and Schedule Builder
  • Assist students with understanding APAS and academic progress
  • Assist student with preparation for full appointments with advising staff
  • Assist students in understanding degree requirements, liberal education requirements and prerequisites
  • Maintain accurate records of student contacts
  • Assist students in understanding the requirements, procedures, and resources of the College (including, but not limited to: research, pre-health, and advising resources)
  • Assist with clerical /reception

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current College of Biological Sciences or CBS Honors student   
  • Student must have successfully completed two semesters as a College of Biological Sciences student by the time of hire
  • Good academic standing
  • Ability to communicate well both in person and through various media channels (Google Hangout, Google Chat, email, etc.)  and relate meaningfully with students as determined in an interview
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • No campus disciplinary record
  • Ability to understand and communicate appropriate professional boundaries with peers, both online and in person
  • Awareness of when to refer students to full time CBS Student Services staff
  • Enrollment in a baccalaureate program for the duration of employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Computer literate: working knowledge and or/familiarity with Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, Google+    Previous experience working in a customer service role
  • Previous experience working with young adults
  • Ability to work with confidential information

Job Requirements

  • Availability to work part time during semester breaks and during summer orientation
  • Maintain good academic standing each semester while employed
  • Participate in initial and ongoing training programs and staff meetings as requested
  • Become familiar with all services of the College of Biological Sciences
  • Assist students individually or in groups
  • Adhere to a predetermined work schedule not to exceed 20 hours per week, including weekly evening hours
  • Behave professionally and dress appropriately

Organizational Relationships

The peer advisor reports to CBS Student Services staff and interacts with staff from other units of the department and the College of Biological Sciences.

Work Schedule

The work schedule will not exceed 20 hours per week during the academic calendar year (September - May). Peer advisors typically work part-time during orientation/registration through most of the summer, and during semester breaks.
