In 2008, the University has requested $225.5 million in state support for bonding projects to preserve and expand the building assets we have. Sixty-five percent of University buildings are more than 30 years old, and 25 percent are more than 70 years old. Every day more than 80,000 students, faculty and staff use our campuses. Taking care of the University’s facilities and infrastructure is a wise investment.
The Minnesota House and Senate, as well as the Governor, have issued their bonding proposals (PDF): the House calls for $136.2 million and the Senate would provide $133.9 million, while the Governor recommends $129.3 million. The Legislature will now begin to negotiate the size and scope of the bonding package it will eventually deliver to the Governor.
Faculty, staff, alumni and students can all have a powerful impact on legislators as they vote on the 2008 University bonding request.
