Douglas C. Pratt Undergraduate Scholarship
The Pratt Scholarship will award a student with demonstrated leadership experience. This fund, established by Drs. Mary Kemen and Brian Randall, is named in recognition of Professor Douglass C. Pratt, who served as a mentor to Mary Kemen while she worked in his lab as an undergraduate.
Eligibility Criteria: Student must have an overall grade point average of 3.3 or better and be a sophomore, junior or senior. Special consideration will be given to students who demonstrate leadership experience.
Dr. James A. Fuchs Family Scholarship
Preference will be given for students who are biochemistry majors. Further preference will be given for students who will contribute to student body diversity.
Franklin D. Enfield Memorial Scholarship
The Franklin D. Enfield Memorial Scholarship is used to provide scholarships to CBS undergraduate students.
Jane and Ed Phillips Scholarship
The purpose of the fund is to support a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in the College of Biological Sciences (based on merit and need).
Kathryn Hanna Biology Colloquium Scholarship
The purpose of this fund is to provide financial support to students with financial need. Preference will be given for students who have taken a Biology Colloquium Course or its future equivalent
Kenneth Bachofer and Linda Marie Scholarship
The purpose of this fund is to support a full-time CBS student who demonstrates academic excellence, leadership qualities and a passion for the College of Biological Sciences. A cumulative GPA of at least a 3.5 is required of applicants. Student must have completed at least 60 credits. Preference for a student involved with research.
Leon A. Snyder Memorial Scholarship Award
The Snyder Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled as a senior during the current academic year. In honor of the memory of Leon A. Snyder, Professor of Genetics and Cell Biology in the College of Biological Sciences, this award recognizes students who pursue broad educational interests, and who have excelled in foreign language, literature, philosophy, history, art, and social science courses.
Eligibility Criteria: Student must have completed at least 90 credits by the end of the current spring semester. Preference will be given to students with a broad educational background which includes courses in literature, philosophy, history, the arts, social sciences and foreign languages. The statement of purpose should address the question: What were the important influences leading you to choose biological sciences as a major area of study?
Michael Loveless Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was created in honor of Michael Loveless, an outstanding undergraduate student who exemplified the ideals of student leadership and academics. His parents established this scholarship after his untimely death in 1986. It supports students with outstanding academic performance who are committed to community service.
Milton and Danae Andrews Scholarship for Undergraduate Research
To be eligible for consideration, the students shall be able to demonstrate that their research project was a significant accomplishment in advancing research in the fields of human medicine or physiology.
Monica Tsang and James Weatherbee Merit Scholarship in Biology
The Tsang/Weatherbee Merit Scholarship is for a full-time CBS student pursuing a biology degree who has (1) demonstrated academic achievement in the math and science disciplines, (2) demonstrated rigor in course selection, (3) an articulated career path and (4) a GPA of 3.5 or better.
Norman Kerr Memorial Scholarship
The Kerr Scholarship is for a CBS student who intends to pursue a career in teaching, at any academic level. The scholarship honors the memory of Norman Kerr, Stanley Dagley Teaching Award winner, Professor of Zoology (1959-1965) and Genetics and Cell Biology (1965-1995) and Associate Dean of CBS (1967-1980). This scholarship reflects Norman Kerr’s professional passion and dedication to education and to undergraduate students.
Eligibility Criteria: Student must (1) have completed at least 60 credits by the end of the current Spring Semester, (2) have an overall grade point average of 3.25 or better, and (3) be a U.S. citizen. The personal statement must provide evidence of a desire to become a teacher, including a discussion of motivation and plans.
Richard S. Caldecott Award
The Richard Caldecott Award is awarded to a student who demonstrates outstanding academic and extracurricular accomplishments. Richard Caldecott was the founding dean of the College of Biological Sciences and the award was established in order to honor Dr. Caldecott upon his retirement from the University of Minnesota.
Sarah Tilman Scholarship
To provide scholarship support to a College of Biological Sciences student majoring in Biology or Ecology during their junior or senior year. Preference given to an academically highly ranked student who is interested in teaching science in K-12 schools.
Spandl Family Scholarship
The Spandl Family Scholarship was established by Drs. Eric and Andrea Spandl to support talented students pursuing undergraduate degrees in biology. Eric and Andrea believe in the power of a University of Minnesota education and are both University of Minnesota graduates. Andrea received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the College of Biological Sciences and went on to receive her medical doctorate from the University of Minnesota. Eric has a bachelor’s degree in Agronomy from the University of Minnesota and after receiving his Ph.D. from Michigan State University, he served in a post-doctorate position at the University of Minnesota.
Stanley Dagley Memorial Scholarship
To be used for scholarships awarded to undergraduates in the College of Biological Sciences who will engage in research during the summer. The scholarship will be open to CBS students from those entering a junior level standing through those with a senior level standing. Preference will be given to students electing research in the field of Biochemistry.
Zoology Department Memorial Scholarship
The Zoology Department scholarship is open to any full-time CBS undergraduate student. Preference will be given to students who contribute to student body diversity. A plus-factor will be given to Native American Indian or African American students if they are underrepresented in the University/CBS or in the applicable major or program at the time of the award.
Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biophysics
Danielson Blake Family Scholarship
The Danielson Family created this scholarship in 2011 to honor their family’s passion for undergraduate students.
Eligibility Criteria: The Danielson Blake Family Scholarship provides a one year, need-based scholarship for a student studying Biochemistry.
Henrietta Novy Miller Scholarship
The Miller Scholarship is for a student majoring in Biochemistry who has demonstrated academic excellence and professional development, usually through research. The friends and colleagues of Henrietta Miller established this scholarship in appreciation of her years of service as Assistant Administrator for the Biochemistry Department.
Eligibility Criteria: Student must (1) be a Biochemistry major and (2) have completed at least 60 credits by the end of the current spring semester.
Juliamarie Andreen Grilly Undergraduate Research Scholarship in Molecular Biology
The Grilly Scholarship provides a scholarship to a full-time undergraduate student within the College of Biological Sciences who is carrying out research in the field of molecular biology. The scholarship may be used to support the academic year or summer research experience of the recipient. Grilly graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1946 and spent her entire professional career as a research scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratories.
Eligibility Criteria: Student must be a full-time student enrolled in the College of Biological Sciences and engaged in research in the area of molecular biology. Please provide a one-page description of your research project.
L.M. Henderson Award
Scholarship in recognition of academic and research accomplishments of Biochemistry undergraduates. Recipients should be selected based on high academic performance and demonstrated professional development, usually through undergraduate research activity. Awards will be made to senior students majoring in Biochemistry.
Richard C. Nelson Scholarship in Biochemistry
The Richard C. Nelson Scholarship in Biochemistry will be used to provide scholarships for students whose major is Biochemistry and they have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Scholarship recipients are eligible for renewal of the award without reapplication if a minimum GPA of 3.0 is maintained. Should funds be available, multiple awards may be given in any year.
Harold Paul Morris Scholarship
The Morris Scholarship is awarded to a student who is majoring in either Biochemistry or GCD, and who demonstrates outstanding academic accomplishments. This scholarship was established in memory of Harold Paul Morris, a University of Minnesota graduate (B.S. 1925, Ph.D. 1930) and Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award winner (1970), following a distinguished research career in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration, and the National Cancer Institute, as well as in academia.
Eligibility Criteria: Student must (1) be a Biochemistry or GCD major (2) have an overall grade point average of 3.3 or better, and (3) include a brief description of any financial need or hardship.
Victor Bloomfield and Elsa Shapiro Scholarship
This scholarship supports promising undergraduate students who have financial need.
Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior
Bill Berg CBS Scholarship
The purpose of the Fund is to provide financial support to students who have expressed an interest in pursuing a career in the field of natural resource science or are studying towards a degree in the area of ecology, evolution and behavior.
When possible, preference will be given to students who will enhance the diversity of the student body as described by the University. This award may be renewable to the recipient for two (2) consecutive years, provided the recipient demonstrates satisfactory progress toward a degree and continues to meet the criteria of the award.
Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development
Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development Undergraduate Scholarship
Designated for students majoring in genetics, cell biology, and development, this scholarship is funded by alumnus Carl Barnes, who earned a B.S. degree from CBS in 1992 and went on to graduate from the U of M Medical School. Barnes practices internal medicine in Colorado.
Eligibility Criteria: Student must be a GCD major. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit, with some consideration given to extracurricular involvement.

Ross and Esther Johnson Scholarship
Ross Johnson retired from CBS after a 43-year career as a professor and former head of the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Development. This scholarship provides support to full time undergraduate students in CBS that demonstrate an interest in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology.
Microbiology
Palmer Rogers Scholarship
The Rogers Scholarship is awarded to CBS students majoring in Microbiology. The scholarship honors the dedication of the late Dr. Palmer Rogers to students in the Microbiology program.
Eligibility Criteria: The student must (1) be a Microbiology major, (2) have completed, are in the process of completing, or have been accepted into a laboratory to complete a semester of research in microbiology, and (3) provide a description of their research or proposed project.
Patrick Cleary Scholarship
Patrick Cleary has been a faculty member in the Department of Microbiology since 1972. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Rochester in New York and served a fellowship at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research focuses on the molecular basis of streptococci A disease. Cleary created this scholarship to support microbiology students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in coursework and research.
Eligibility Criteria: Students must have completed general microbiology and either one quarter of research in a microbiology lab or accepted for an upcoming semester.
Plant and Microbial Biology
Eloise Newcomb Pittman Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship honors the memory of Eloise Pittman, an alumna who graduated in the late 1930s with degrees in botany and chemistry, and became a teacher. It is awarded to undergraduates with interest and ability in the field of plant biology.
John T. Stout Memorial Scholarship
John (BA Zoology '61; Ph.D. Plant Genetics '72) spent most of his career as a molecular biologist for Asgrow Seed Company (Monsanto). This scholarship supports students interested in plant biology research.
