Stefanie Wiesneski, the college’s coordinator of advising, was recently named as a recipient of the 2015-16 John Tate Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising. The award recognizes academic advisors at the University of Minnesota who display excellence in their work in honor of John Tate, professor of physics and the first dean of University College.

“Stefanie embodies the advising practices, leadership skills and supervision techniques that define a true champion in the work of college student development,” says Nikki Letawsky Shultz, assistant dean of student affairs and international programs. “She is an irreplaceable asset to the College of Biological Sciences and the University of Minnesota. I am thrilled that she received this award.”

Wiesneski joined the CBS Student Services staff in 2009 as an academic advisor and moved into her current role in 2013. She still sees undergraduate advisees, as well as overseeing advising activities for the college. In addition, she served on numerous collegiate academic groups, including the Educational Policy Committee.

“She has an incredible gift of navigating academic policy and procedure consistently among all students, along with her ability to recognize and remember details about each student, making their advising experiences personalized and unique,” says Letawsky Shultz.

Wiesneski appreciates the recognition, but also the work others did to make this opportunity happen.

"I feel incredibly grateful," says Wiesneski. "To all the faculty, students and fellow staff members who made this possible, I appreciate all you've done. It means a lot to receive this award and I feel truly honored."
