CBS Students Named SEED Award Recipients

Two students from the College of Biological Sciences were awarded 2017 Scholarly Excellence in Equity and Diversity (SEED) Awards for their involvement in community outreach.

In addition to excelling academically, Leah Alemu and Bennett Olupo, both seniors and members of the CBS Dean’s Scholars, have dedicated their college careers to making contributions in the greater Twin Cities.

Alemnu, who studies biology, focuses on making wellness accessible to all through her roles as a food-shelf assistant and volunteer at a bilingual health and wellness program. Olupo, who is majoring in biology and Spanish, works to break down barriers for marginalized students by tutoring high schoolers and through a student group for biracial/multiracial students he started.

Alemu and Olupo were among the 17 students recognized for this award at the University’s annual Equity and Diversity Breakfast held last month.
