Introducing: The Research Communication Series!

Join CBS Undergraduate Research Coordinator Dr. Jacob Moore to discuss best practices for communicating the results of your scientific research to other scientists, summarizing your research into short “elevator pitches”, and writing about the skills you’ve gained on applications for professional schools. This program is great for students preparing for lab meetings, symposiums, networking events, or professional school applications. Register for individual workshops, or for the entire series! To register for the entire series: https://z.umn.edu/researchcom. Questions? Email Dr. Moore at moorejl@umn.edu.

Note: To attend any of these workshops you must have worked in a lab for at least one semester.  If you have questions about getting started in research, you can schedule an Undergraduate Research Coaching appointment with Dr. Moore at cbsss.appointments.umn.edu or by calling CBS Student Services at 612.624.9717.

Workshop One: Communicating Science to Other Scientists
Has your PI ever asked you to present at a lab meeting? Are you currently preparing for a conference or symposium? Join CBS Undergraduate Research Coordinator Dr. Jacob Moore to discuss ways in which scientists communicate with other scientists. We will discuss conference presentations, both oral and poster format, and give you the opportunity to outline the story you want to tell about your own research.

Date: Tuesday, March 6
Time: 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Location: 530A Bruininks
Register to attend at z.umn.edu/researchcom1

Workshop Two: Communicating your Research in 5 Minutes or Less!
There are many situations in which you might need to talk about your research, but not have a large amount of time to do so. For instance, while presenting a poster at a conference, describing your research experiences at a networking event or job interview, or even talking about what you’ve been working on with a non-scientist family member or friend. Join CBS Undergraduate Research Coordinator Dr. Jacob Moore and learn how to compose a short “elevator speech” for multiple audiences, using results from your own research experience.

Date: Wednesday, March 21
Time: 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Location: MCB 2-120
Register to attend at z.umn.edu/researchcom2

Workshop Three: Connecting Undergraduate Research to Health Professions
Are you planning on applying to medical or professional school within the next two years? Do you have questions about how your undergraduate research experience has helped prepare you for your future career in a health profession? Join the CBS Undergraduate Research Coordinator, Dr. Jacob Moore, and the Pre-Health Career Coach, Luke Fueling Porter, to discuss how best to connect your research experiences to your future goals in the health professions. In this workshop, you will reflect on the skills you’ve gained through undergraduate research, and practice writing about your experiences in preparation for submitting an application to a health professional school.

Date: Thursday, May 3
Time: 3:00-4:00 p.m.
Location: MCRB 450
