MicB 3301 Biology of Microorganisms

Prereq:   [BIOL 1002 or BIOL 1009 or BIOL 2003], [CHEM 2301 or BIOC 2331]

Description:  Course covers the physiology, biochemistry, pathogenesis, and ecology of microbes including fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Immunology and molecular structure in relation to microbial function and disease is also covered. Course includes a laboratory. Course will utilize the Moodle website. Course texts: Prescott's Microbiology (McGraw Hill) 9th edition, MICB 3301 Laboratory Manual (Current summer edition). Target audience: undergraduate science majors and pre-professional students (including Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, and Genetics).

Class Time: 60% Lecture, 40% Laboratory.

Work Load: 20-30 pages reading per week, 8-10 pages writing per term, 4 exams. Students write 2 laboratory reports (8-10 pages total) and maintain a laboratory notebook.

Grade: 60% other evaluation. 60% based on lecture and lecture exams; 40% based on laboratory quizzes, reports and performance

Exam Format: Short answer, fill in the blank, true/false, multiple choice
