I support educational labs for CBS—in particular ecology and zoology. I make sure professors have what they need for their lab courses. Two big parts of my job are coordinating ecology students’ research projects and caring for the live animals housed in our zoology labs.
What did you do before joining CBS? What led you to this position?
I was a Master’s student at Hofstra University, finishing my MS in biology. I taught biology lab sections at Hofstra and also worked part-time at a tutoring center called C2 Education, doing test prep, homework help, and subject tutoring for kids ranging from second grade through high school.
When I saw a posting for this position, I thought it sounded like the perfect opportunity to combine my interests in biology education and animal care. I work with undergraduate students as we both learn through their research projects, plus I care for and show students the interesting animals we have living in the zoology teaching lab.
What's the most interesting or unusual thing that's happened on the job?
It’s hard to pick one thing, because when working with students and animals different things always come up! Ecology students come up with cool ideas for their projects that keep my days interesting. I’ve gotten to work with worms, snails, crayfish, hissing cockroaches, and even mosquitoes! As for the animals in our zoology labs, our leopard gecko, Leonard, is apparently an escape artist and got out of his tank in the spring. Many thought he was lost forever – until he showed up again six months later!
What are some of your hobbies outside of work?
I love to care for and hang out with my pets at home. I have a black cat named Pantera, a bearded dragon named Pogo, and a corn snake named Inara. I also enjoy baking and walking/hiking.
What dish are you most likely to bring to a potluck?
Either a dessert (because I love to bake) or macaroni and cheese (because it is one of my favorites). Or I make pretty good guacamole!
