I’m pleased to share the news that we’ve reached our $21 million campaign fundraising goal! We still have work to do to raise funds for specific projects and priorities, but this milestone is an important one because it points to the tremendous community of donors — including a number of faculty and staff — who are passionate about supporting our mission and our students.
One of the things that sets CBS apart is the fact that we focus on the depth and breadth of biology. Yet even here where collaboration across sub-disciplines could and should be the norm, we struggle to do so. I was among those selected by the National Science Foundation to participate in an upcoming Jumpstart meeting on Reintegrating Biology, an NSF-funded effort to address this challenge.
I believe we are uniquely positioned to model how to do this work. In fact, we are already engaging in efforts of this kind through our Grand Challenges in Biology Postdoctoral Program, which funds projects premised on collaboration across disciplines. The program is now in its fourth year and will announce this year’s call next week with an application deadline in early February 2020. Please encourage postdocs here and at other institutions to apply!
Also, just a reminder as we approach the end of the semester that this can be a stressful time for students. The well-being of our undergraduate and graduate students is paramount. If you are looking for guidance on how to best assist a student in need of support, you can start with these University resources.
