Dean's note - November 2022

It’s hard to believe the fall semester is more than half over and finals are just over a month away. This time of year is incredibly busy for all of us. There is a lot happening across the college. Here are a few items of interest.

Undergraduate education updates
Last week, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education Laurie Parker sent an update to the college about undergraduate education with lots of great information about SERU results, undergraduate research, assessment, and faculty professional development opportunities. I encourage you to check out the update if you have not already.

Inclusive teaching
Included in those updates was mention of the relaunch of the Faculty Fellows for Inclusive Excellence program this spring. The program provides training and mentoring for faculty in inclusive teaching practices. It’s a great program and I encourage anyone with the interest and bandwidth to apply when the call goes out later this fall. Inclusive teaching is a cornerstone of efforts to ensure that we meet students where they are to help them realize their full potential.

Associate dean for faculty
As you know, Marlene Zuk is stepping down from her role as associate dean for faculty in January after years of outstanding service to the college. I encourage faculty interested in the role to learn more about the position and consider applying. It’s an excellent way to gain academic leadership experience particularly around recruitment, retention, and development. The position is 50% time. A detailed job description is available here and those interested in applying can do so on the University of Minnesota’s Human Resources site (Job ID #352510). Application review will begin December 1.

Give to the Max for transfer students
For those interested in supporting our transfer students, there’s an excellent opportunity to increase the impact of your gift coming up later this month. If you contribute to the college’s Give to the Max Day campaign, your gift will be matched until we reach $8,500! You can help in other ways, too. Stayed tuned for more information in the days ahead.

Please be sure to make time for activities that support your physical and mental health especially during this transition to a colder, darker time of year!
