Marlene Zuk (EEB) received an honorary doctorate from the University of Jyväskylä in Finland in August. The ceremony was held in conjunction with the university’s graduate student graduation ceremony, held every four years as is customary at Finnish higher education institutions. Zuk received a top hat and personalized sword during the the ceremony. “It’s rather elaborate. The whole town celebrates,” says Zuk. “The ceremony and celebration required two different pairs of gloves. Apparently, gloves are needed when handling a ceremonial sword.” Zuk received an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University in Sweden in 2010 where she was a visiting professor in 1999 and 2011.
