The University of Minnesota’s Office for Public Engagement (OPE) recently named Jim Krueger, building and grounds supervisor at Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve, a recipient of the 2018 Outstanding Community Service Award. Each year, OPE selects faculty, staff and students who make significant contributions to the wellbeing of society to receive the award.
An outdoor enthusiast, Krueger volunteers by providing outreach programming in collaboration with the Minnesota DNR’s Becoming an Outdoors Woman program, the National Archery in the Schools and the Boy Scouts. That love of nature continues in his work as he manages the buildings and grounds at Cedar Creek, an internationally recognized field station and a resource offering educational opportunities to local schools and community.
“Parents frequently express gratitude for Jim’s willingness to organize events that connect parents with their kids in nature,” says Forest Isbell, associate director at Cedar Creek. “Jim not only creates opportunities for people to be inspired by Cedar Creek today, he also takes care of our lands and waters so that future generations will be able to equally enjoy their natural beauty.”
