David Matthes, faculty member in the Department of Biology Teaching and Learning, recently received the Horace T. Morse-University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education. The University has offered this award since 1965 to faculty who make outstanding contributions to undergraduate education.

“David has provided outstanding learning experiences to a wide range of CBS students in his years in the College,” says David Kirkpatrick, interim BTL department head. “The bestowing of the Morse-Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award indicates that the rest of the University has come to appreciate what a superb teacher David has been, both for our CBS students and for the greater community.”

Matthes joined the CBS faculty in 2008. He is among the faculty members that helped contribute to the award-winning Foundations of Biology course sequence, and he also received the College of Biological Sciences’ Stanley Dagley-Samuel Kirkwood Undergraduate Education Award in 2015. In addition to his work with Foundations of Biology, Matthes is well known for his work implementing active-learning strategies in his courses on topics relating to genetics and bioinformatics.
