Impact Exchange

Science is central to many of today’s most critical conversations. The Impact Exchange is about making sure scientists (and future scientists) are part of the conversation. Through a unique integrated approach we create an engagement ecosystem that encompasses science communication training, public outreach and broader impacts.

Our approach

We launched the Impact Exchange to provide centralized support and vision for outreach programs and foster a more holistic approach to community engagement. The Impact Exchange serves as a multidisciplinary hub for innovation and training, bringing together experts in communication, design, and the sciences. Students, faculty and staff engage at various points along a continuum designed to connect research and community.

Core initiatives include:

  • Science Communication Lab is an incubator for developing and testing new models for engagement and establishing novel partnerships with local schools, community groups, and cultural institutions. Lab members collaborate with faculty to develop and implement novel broader impact strategies. It is an interdisciplinary internship program for writers, scientists, artists, and designers interested in science communication.
  • Market Science is a team of scientists from the University of Minnesota, and around the Twin Cities, sharing science through hands-on learning activities for kids, delving into scientific questions for market goers, and starting conversations between researchers and their communities.
  • InSciEd Out provides student-driven STEM experiences to underrepresented and low socioeconomic status students across the greater Twin Cities area.
