Inclusive practices in education and academic communities have been a continuing theme in my life and scholarship. My studies of intercultural aspects of learning science through interpersonal community-building are motivated by my educational and public health training.

Scholarly interests

From my doctoral work in molecular pathogenesis as well as my Master of Public Health focusing on community education, my teaching and curriculum practices include active-learning strategies for diverse preferences in learning, inquiry-based learning, discipline research-based (DBER) learning, and inclusive practices in education. These practices forged me as a groundbreaker in different roles and to be a voice for equity and inclusion while striving to be a role-model through cultural humility.

Since “I go where I am called” has been my mantra, service extends to my scholarly work, mentoring, and publications involving studies of intercultural science learning and interpersonal community-building. From my educational public health training, a greater focus on cultural humility and inclusive practices in academic communities intensified through a meaningful community-partnership with the Cultural Wellness Center in our urban neighborhood. When we practice cultural wellness in community, the individual and the community have potential for greater health than when we live in isolation.

Within the context of biochemistry, together students and I formed a co-mentoring community-building CoCo Café team where we co-mentor and learn from each other as we self-reflect to focus on our own growth and development. Our work examines student learning and health behaviors with curricular interventions to increase ability to manage stress in the STEM-M environment.

These concepts are all part of building equitable and inclusive practices in curriculum, classrooms, and laboratories. Equity and inclusion at other levels through the educational process include studies of conference structure, who is part of leadership, who gets invited, and who feels they belong. Interpersonal studies of these aspects through anti-racism frameworks support that building these connections in STEM-M are meaningful in retention and success.
