Expertise:
- Graphical data analysis, Mathematical time trend modeling
Research Interests
Early research Early research was in laboratory biology including microbiology and cellular immunology. That research included the mathematical modeling of the impact of hormones made by one group of cells to influence other cells. The mathematics was transferred directly and successfully to mass media messages sent by one group of people, the publishers, to influence other people, a population receiving the messages.
Impact of persuasive information on public opinions and behaviors Persuasive information from the press alone can be used in the differential equation model of ideodynamics to make consistently accurate predictions of time trends public opinions and behaviors (Fan, 1988; Fan, 1990; Fan, 2010b) without the expanding error problems of linear autoregressive models (Fan and Cook, 2003).
Topics for successful predictions have been not only in business (Fan et al., 2011; Fan et al., 9999) but also in other domains such as politics (Best and Fan, 2012), economics (Fan, 2010a), and health (Fan et al., 2004) with cigarette pricing being another predictor.
Predictions for Toyota's reputation can be made from not only the press but also blogs, Internet forums, and Tweets (Fan, 2012; Fan et al., 2011; Fan et al., 9999) so all these media have similar content.
Computer content analysis of text The InfoTrend method for the computer assisted content analysis of text (Fan, 1994; Fan, 2010b) was developed for the predictions of public opinions and behaviors discussed above.
The InfoTrend method has also been used for prediction independent analyses in areas such as the analysis of health communications (Kim et al., 2011) and press coverage in natural resources (Bengston et al., 2010).
InfAlignmap The InfAlign map is a method for the computer display of multiple properties of hundreds of individual items simultaneously (Fan and Fan, 2009). The display is dynamic such that a user can rearrange the map by simple drag and drop operations (Fan, 2011a).
Social networks and the diffusion of innovations The ideodynamic model has been extended to a general model for the diffusion of innovations (Fan, 2009) and the evolution of ideas in social networks.
Diffusion of ideas in a classroom setting was also accomplished using a self-registration method in which students registered all steps in the diffusion process with a central computer server (Fan, 2011c).
Survey methodology Methods are proposed for obtaining representative survey responses from non-representative samples of the population (Fan, 2011b).
