Saara J. DeWalt, Ph.D.
Dean, College of Biological Sciences
Dr. Saara DeWalt was appointed dean of the College of Biological Sciences in 2023. A distinguished scholar and administrator, she joined the college following nearly two decades at Clemson University, where she held numerous leadership and service roles, most notably as chair of the Department of Biological Sciences. In that capacity, she led one of the university’s largest academic units and managed an expansive portfolio of interdisciplinary research. In addition to her role as dean, Dr. DeWalt provides strategic leadership for the university as a member of the St. Paul campus planning committee among. A plant ecologist, Dr. DeWalt’s research is globally engaged and spans multiple disciplines within the biological sciences. She served as president of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation. She earned her Ph.D. in biological sciences from Louisiana State University.

KEYNOTE
Kien Nguyen, Ph.D., MBA
Business Development Manager, Mayo Clinic
CBS Class of 1990
Dr. Kien Nguyen is a business development executive at Mayo Clinic, leading innovation and partnership initiatives. With a career spanning nearly three decades, Dr. Nguyen has been a pivotal force in the medical device sector, serving as a CEO, entrepreneur, and global commercial leader for organizations.
Dr. Nguyen holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Colorado - Boulder and an MBA from Columbia Business School. He also earned degrees in Genetics and Cell Biology from the University of Minnesota and Microbiology from Minnesota State University. A champion for innovation and education, he specializes in translating breakthrough scientific research into sustainable healthcare solutions that improve patient lives on a global scale.

John Ward, Ph.D.
Professor, Plant and Microbial Biology
John Ward joined the College of Biological Sciences faculty in 2001. He is head of the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology. His research focuses on understanding metabolite transporter proteins in plants using electrophysiology and molecular biology. He teaches general botany and is an instructor at Nature of Life at the Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories. He has served in various leadership roles, including as a former associate dean for undergraduate education for the college.

Kodi Verhalen, J.D.
University of Minnesota Board of Regents
Kodi Verhalen is a partner in the energy practice group of Taft Law. She is also licensed as a professional engineer in Minnesota. Prior to practicing law, Verhalen was a permitting analyst at Great River Energy. Verhalen has previously served in various leadership roles, including as a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association's Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law Section Council; national director for Discover Engineering; president of the National Society of Professional Engineers; director for the Minnesota Professional Engineers Foundation; and president of the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers. Verhalen received a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering, with minors in chemistry and environmental engineering, from the University of Minnesota Duluth and a law degree from William Mitchell College of Law (now Mitchell Hamline School of Law).

Tseganesh Selameab, M.D.
CBS Class of 1999
Dr. Tseganesh Selameab is a wife, mother of three girls, and dedicated physician committed to serving refugee, immigrant, and urban underserved communities. She earned her medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School and completed her Internal Medicine residency at Boston Medical Center. A passionate advocate for health equity, she integrates clinical care with community-based advocacy. She is also deeply engaged in narrative medicine, sharing her storytelling at medical school ceremonies, regional conferences, and local story slams. Dr. Selameab currently serves as Governor of the Minnesota Chapter of the American College of Physicians, working to advance mentorship, equity, and professional development in healthcare.

Honors and distinction designations
College of Biological Sciences degree candidates may graduate with either Latin Honors, Distinction, or both. These citations are provisional and do not become official until all requirements for the award are fulfilled.
LATIN HONORS DESIGNATIONS
Students graduating from the College of Biological Sciences through the University Honors Program took part in a rigorous course of study, research, scholarship, or other creative work in the major, culminating in an Honors thesis representing independent work done under the direction of a faculty supervisor or mentor. Students graduating cum laude (with honor) have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 for the last 60 graded credits at University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (UMTC). Magna cum laude (with great honor) awards require a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.66 and summa cum laude (with highest honor) awards require a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.75 in the final 60 graded credits at UMTC.
DISTINCTION DESIGNATIONS
Students earn graduation “with distinction” or “with high distinction” based on cumulative GPA with at least 60 graded credits completed at UMTC. Students graduating “with distinction” must have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher in UMTC coursework at the time of graduation; students graduating “with high distinction” must have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher in UMTC coursework at the time of graduation. Students graduating with distinction are wearing gold cords, and those graduating with high distinction are wearing maroon and gold cords.
