Chris Borgen

Where did you transfer from?

University of Minnesota (Duluth)

Why did you want to come to the University of Minnesota?

I was interested in the neuroscience research program and I felt there were more opportunities to get involved in research here.

What are you researching?

We are researching the role of glial cells as a mediator in the immune response to viruses such as cytomegalovirus and herpes-simplex virus. This research is important because individuals affected by either of these viruses can suffer brain damage caused by over-active immune systems, even after the infection has been eradicated. I choose this project because it pertains to my neuroscience major.

What have you gotten out of this experience?

I have been exposed to the type of work done in a research lab, which is helping me decide what I want to pursue as a career. I have also learned specific lab techniques that will help me to become more qualified for other lab jobs.

What are your interests outside of school?

I like listening to and playing music, hanging out with friends, and running.

What are you plans for the future?

In the immediate future, I want to continue studying neuroscience and finish my undergraduate degree. I am currently looking into different options for graduate programs.
