Why did you want to come to the University of Minnesota?
I came to the University of Minnesota because it offers a neuroscience degree, which was my original major. The University is also a strong research-oriented institution, and has a lot to offer in that regard. There are amazing and awesome projects to pique your interest everywhere you look!
What did you research?
My research topic was on the identification of potential salvage therapies for bortezomib-resistant multiple myeloma. The proteasome inhibitor bortezomib (trade name Velcade) is currently used as a frontline treatment for blood and lymph cancers, but patients often develop resistance through unknown mechanisms. I treated bortezomib-resistant cells with two different preclinical drugs to determine if either could help fight drug resistance in patients going through salvage therapy.
What did you get out of this experience?
The HHMI program gave me the excellent opportunity to do work that can directly affect patient care. It was especially helpful for me as a transfer student to have a chance to directly contribute to a research lab. Participating in the program alongside the foundations courses at the University really boosted my independence and understanding of the nature of scientific inquiry. Though I have since chosen to pursue a B.S. in psychology, my experience in the HHMI program was invaluable to my undergraduate career.
What are you interests outside of school?
I like to cook and try different foods. I also like to bike (especially on the Greenway).
Do you participate in any extracurricular activities?
I am a K-8 tutor/mentor with Project for Pride in Living and it is a lot of fun!
What are you plans for the future?
I will be doing research as part of the capstone of my psychology major. I am currently pre-pharmacy but I'm also exploring graduate research in biological psychology.
