Where did you transfer from?
St. Cloud State
Why did you want to come to the University of Minnesota?
I wanted to attend a school that had a proven track record of high-quality research and a very solid science education program.
What are you researching?
The lab that I work in is trying to elucidate the structure of mitochondrial pyruvate carrier proteins, which transfer the pyruvate produced from glycolysis and other metabolic activities into the mitochondria. I've been very interested in the process of the metabolism since taking my first biochemistry class and I’ve had the opportunity to pursue that interest in a laboratory setting. The research is very important for understanding the general science behind the breakdown of food within the body.
What have you gotten out of this experience?
The research has provided me with the opportunity to understand what the everyday life of a research scientist is like. It has also given me a chance to interact with the scientists who perform this research and learn a great deal about the molecular basis of the research that we are conducting. This experience will be invaluable in assessing my future career options and deciding whether I would like to pursue research in the future.
What are your interests outside of school?
Video games, non-fiction science reading, and movies.
What do you have planned for the future?
I am very interested in continuing research in this lab and continuing to learn about the metabolism. After I graduate, I intend to apply to M.D./Ph.D. programs that will hopefully allow me to continue doing research in the areas that I am interested in.
