Phong Nguyen

Where did you transfer from?

I transferred from Century College after completing my generals.

Why did you want to come to the University of Minnesota?

The University of Minnesota is a great school where I could get a biochemistry degree and get involved in other opportunities that will help me in my future career.

What are you researching?

Currently, we are mutating the yaaH protein of E.coli to examine how it functions. The goal in the project is learn more about yaaH’s function as acetate transporters and hopefully identify the gate channel for the acetate transporters. I choose this project because it is closely relative to my major (biochemistry).

What have you gotten out of this experience?

I have learned many different techniques in the lab, such as doing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and miniprep, designing primers, growing bacteria cultures, and isolating proteins. Also, I have learned about the scientific process, by making hypotheses, seeing how experiments are designed and analyzing results. This has been a great opportunity for me to gain knowledge as well as experience working in a lab. It should only help me as I go forward with my studies.

What are your interests outside of school?

I usually listen to music and hang out with friends in my free time. I also like to go to gym to stay fit and I play tennis in the summer.

Do you participate in any extracurricular activities?

I am a member of the Biochemistry Club.

What are you plans for the future?

I would like to study biochemistry in graduate school at the University of Minnesota.
