Vera Boateng

Where did you transfer from?

Saint Paul College

Why did you want to come to the University of Minnesota?

I transferred to the University of Minnesota because I knew that it would provide me with the opportunity to help me pursue my future goals.

What are you researching?

In our research, we are trying to identify telomere-associated (TLO) genes in different clinical isolates of Candida albicans. We chose this topic because there is a wide variety of TLO genes present in C. albicans and we know they have the ability to move around in the genome. This research will help us find out more about the variations that exist within this gene family.

What have you gotten out of this experience?

Before this research, I had never had any research experience, so this opportunity has taught me a lot about the research process. This has changed my perspective  on research—I have found that working in a research lab is much more interesting than I had previously thought. I have also leaned new things, like how to isolate genomic DNA and do sequencing analysis.

What are your interests outside of school?

I like to cook and dance.

Do you participate in extracurricular activities?

Currently, I am a children's lead in House of Glory ministries. I am also a member of NorthStar STEM Alliance and a board member of Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students.

What are your plans for the future?

I want to go medical school and pursue my M.D./Ph.D. in pediatrics. I also would like to help raise funds for The Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS), a non-profit organization that helps children with spinal curvature disorders in developing nations.
