Chromebook Password Instructions for Students

For this class you will be using Chromebooks, a cloud-based computer that takes full advantage of Google Apps (Mail, Drive, Calendar, etc.)

Normally, Chromebooks and other applications (like your smart phone’s email app) require you to use a separate password from of your University of Minnesota Internet password, called your Google Desktop/Mobile Client password.  The University requires that these passwords are different.  To reduce confusion around having two passwords, the College of Biological Sciences (CBS) arranged for students in this class to have the option to synchronize the two passwords.  If you opt to do this, you are giving permission for your Google Desktop/Mobile Client password to always be the same as the Internet password.  If you prefer to keep your two passwords separate, be aware that you will need to remember the Google password to login to the Chromebooks.  Below are the steps to perform either option:

Set the Google Desktop/Mobile Client Password:

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to www.umn.edu/myaccount

  2. Select “Set or Change Your Google Desktop/Mobile Client Password”

  3. Fill in the required fields and click Submit.  Note the first field is your current Internet password.

Set the Internet and Google Desktop/Mobile Client Passwords to sync:

  1. Navigate to www.umn.edu/dirtools/chromebook.cgi and login with your x500 username and Internet password.

  2. Select “Yes” and click Submit.

Note: If you connect to your UofM account with email clients or mobile device apps, you will receive login errors from them.
