2021 CBS Commencement FAQs

Why is the in-person commencement option for students only?
We are encouraged by the expanding access to vaccines, but cannot plan for widespread vaccination and acquired immunity by May 15. Therefore, while evolving guidance from the Minnesota Department of Health may allow for larger in-person events, this plan aligns with our values to prioritize the participation and health of students and volunteers, while also providing a celebratory experience for graduates and guests who participate virtually.

Who is this year’s Commencement speaker?
Dr. Leslie Schiff, Professor, CBS Honors Liaison, Associate Dean for University Curriculum, and Director of Undergraduate Studies - Microbiology Major will deliver the 2021 commencement address virtually.

How do I purchase or rent academic attire?
The University Bookstore is hosting No Hassle for Your Tassel March 24-26 and will offer special savings and promotions on academic regalia and other graduation items.Items can also be purchased on an ongoing basis at the University Bookstore in Coffman Memorial Union and online.

All students will receive two physical copies of the commencement program, a diploma cover, and any distinction cords they have earned. Graduates participating solely virtually will have their materials mailed to the address provided in the RSVP form. How will I get cords if I’m graduating with distinction?
Graduates who qualify for distinction cords and plan to participate solely virtually will have their cords mailed to the address provided in the RSVP form. Graduates participating in Mariucci will have cords available at their assigned seats.
