TGF-beta signaling pathway is famous for its role in developmental processes including pattern formation of the body and organs. Recently, the TGF-beta family has also been demonstrated to regulate nervous system development. In the O'Connor lab, I am interested in studying how different TGF-beta molecules influence various aspects of nervous system. Currently, I am focusing on myoglianin, a newly identified member of TGF-beta family in Drosophila. Its expression in surface glia of the CNS suggests that it might play a role in forming or maintaining the blood-brain barrier that is provided by the surface glial cells. I use a combined approach involving genetics, molecular biology, imaging, functional assay and behavioral test.
