Also assistance with maintaining presentation equipment such as projectors in several CBS-managed classrooms.

Academic technology & instructional design support

Consult with experienced CBS-RLT staff to review a course and identify possible changes to instruction or assignments that may increase student engagement or decrease instructor workload. Get assistance troubleshooting issues or setting up complex assignments in your course site. Collaborate to develop new curriculum, learn best practices, implement new strategies, and use other University services that support instruction. Take advantage of one-on-one technology training where you use it-- at your desk or in the classroom. Adapt your course and laboratory to the online environment by using new technologies and different instructional strategies. We also offer annual reviews to update technology and suggest new learning activities.

Custom projects & development

Unique solutions that apply computer science, electrical engineering, and learning technology disciplines to support research and learning. From building custom remote sensor networks for data collection to encouraging active learning through the use of technology such as mobile devices in the classroom, the diverse skillset of our team enables CBS-RLT to take on a wide variety of technology projects.

Data recovery and file backup

Computer emergency backup services for all CBS-owned computers. Backups are securely stored and encrypted. This is provided in collaboration with the College of Science and Engineering and the Office of Information Technology.

Database hosting and support

Design, create, maintain and host existing or new custom databases for research, administrative, or teaching purposes. Recent examples include upgrading a service record database for an internal service organization, hosting several databases containing research data, and creating a custom database to search and display research photos and associated metadata. Development and delivery of data tables, charts, and other visualization methods using the University's data warehouse and other data sources for research, teaching, or other general CBS purposes.

Email list support

We maintain department and job function email lists based on PeopleSoft data.

Loaner devices

To support instructional needs in CBS courses, small numbers of computers and other technology are available to students for short term loan.  Any student in a CBS course requiring laptops may check out college-owned devices at Magrath Library.  Instructors and CBS teaching assistants may also request short term loans of computers and video equipment for emergencies and testing of emerging technology.

Non-credit course, workshop, and conference registration

Our registration system expert will set up your department accounts to receive funds and to list your event.  Free, non-credit events may also be listed.  CBS-RLT provides sales support for discounts and bulk purchases, registration updates, registration troubleshooting, Canvas integration setup, and refund processing.

Research technology and computing support

Support is available to faculty, researchers, and labs who have computing equipment connected to research technology or software. Support includes troubleshooting, repairs, and coordination with vendors. Device recommendations and assistance in building custom, small-scale research computing equipment is also available.

Research technology: purchasing and grant resources

Recommendations for technology purchases that can be supported by our team, will work with enterprise systems, and will comply with security standards.  Standing up devices with appropriate networking and permissions included. Consult during the grant writing process to ensure sufficient funding for technology that works with enterprise systems, for technologists to build and support technology specific to the grant, and for ongoing maintenance of data and publically shared resources.

Software licensing

In addition to freely available software from the Office of Information Technology (OIT), we provide and manage frequently used licensed software to the College. Licensed software includes MatLab, JMP, and Origin. Depending on licensing rules, the software is provided for local installation or through App-To-Go and WTS.

Storage & hosting services

Server and data storage hosting and consultation for Faculty, Staff, and Research Labs in collaboration with the Office of Information Technology.

Student printing credit

Each semester, CBS undergraduates receive a $10 credit to a printing account on their UCard to use on two dedicated CBS printers, one in Moos Tower on East Bank and one in the Biological Sciences building on the St. Paul Campus. Unused Fall semester balances carry forward to Spring semester. Balances reset to $0 at end of academic year. Additional prints use students’ Gopher Gold accounts at a CBS rate of 10¢/page; University rate is 12¢/page.

Website & hosting support

We administer the public CBS website in close collaboration with CBS Communications and the Office of Information Technology to ensure the site is updated and secure. Site analytics and search tools are also incorporated to ensure the best site visitor experience. Hosting lab, project, and CBS-focused websites or web-based applications and tools through the public CBS website or other centrally available resources.

Workflow digitization

Digitization of paper processes and forms into an online workflow system that allows for more efficient processing, online tracking, and easy archiving of forms and requests. Allows for complex online workflows that route through multiple steps and assignees, with automated notifications and updates. New departmental forms or processes can also be digitized.
