Chromebook Quick Start Guide

Welcome to the Active Learning Classroom! In this room, you will be using Chromebooks for your activities. A Chromebook is a cloud-based computer that takes full advantage of Google Apps (Mail, Drive, Calendar, etc.) This means that no local data is stored on the machine itself, and many users can log in to this machine without needing to worry about data security.

To gain access to the wireless network:

  1. When prompted to log into Wi-Fi, choose UofM Secure.

  2. Use the following settings for the authentication phases

    1. PEAP

    2. MSCHAPv2

  3. Use your x500 username in the “identity” field and Internet password to authenticate.

  4. Click “Sign in.”

To login to the Chromebook:

  1. Use your UofM email address (x500@umn.edu) as your username

  2. For your password, there are two options (see set password sections, for help)

    • Google Desktop/Mobile Client password

    • Internet password, if you sync your Internet and Google Desktop/Mobile Client passwords

  3. Click “Sign in.”

To logout when finished with the Chromebook:

  1. Click on your Google profile picture in the bottom-right corner.

  2. Click on “Sign out”.

To sync your Internet and Google Desktop/Mobile Client passwords:

Chrome RDP Quick Start Guide

To install Chrome RDP:

NOTE: If you have installed Chrome RDP before, or it appears on the system already, skip to step 2.

  1. Open a browser windows and select Store.

  2. Search for Chrome RDP download it by clicking on download button.

  1. Once installed, click the “Chrome RDP” app in the pop-up menu.  If there’s no pop-up menu, click the circled icon in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen and it will appear.

Accessing WTS from Chrome RDP:

  1. Enter the name of the server: wts.umn.edu.

  2. WTS will then ask for credentials, enter ad.umn.edu for the server, your x500 for the username, and your x500 password for the password. Then click “OK”

Note: When on WTS, saving files to the C:\ drive will not secure them. You must save them to the network or by launching the Google Drive application by going to https://drive.google.com/a/umn.edu/ from the web browser of WTS, and uploading your files there.

Be sure to “log out” when you are finished using WTS.

To log out of WTS when you’re finished, go to Start -> Log Off.
