CBS maintains a college-level MATLAB license that may be used on:
- University-owned computers used by CBS faculty, staff, or students
- CBS faculty or staff-owned personal computers
Note: Undergraduate Students cannot install MATLAB on their personally-owned devices and must use WTS.

Associate License
Before you begin, request access to the MATLAB Activation Keys and Concurrent license file. (CBS Faculty and Staff Only) Please only request access to the license document one time. Your status will be verified prior to access and typically happens within one business day.
Note: Access resets annually when license is renewed.
- Go to www.mathworks.com and click Sign In
- Login with your MathWorks account or create a new account. You MUST use your University of Minnesota email.
- Click your name in the upper left corner and select Associate License
- Enter one of the Activation Keys and click Associate License.
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the other Activation Key.
Existing Installations
Activate the New License
- Start MATLAB.
- On the MATLAB menus, see Help -> Licensing -> Activate Software.
- Select "Activate automatically use the Internet".
- Login with your MathWorks account.
- Select the new license.
- Continue through the dialogs until you see "Activation is complete".
Deactivate the Old License
- Launch MATLAB.
- On the MATLAB menus, see Help -> Licensing -> Deactivate Software.
- Select the old license and click Deactivate. You can ignore any warnings.
- Quit and restart MATLAB.
New Installations
Before you begin, you must choose an installation type. In most cases, Standalone is the best option. Below is a table to help choose.

Standalone and Concurrent Install
Concurrent installs only: Download the license file listed in the Associated License section.
- Go to MATLAB downloads page.
- Login with your MathWorks account.
- Select desired version.
- Select the appropriate operating system to begin download.
- Extract the contents of the download and launch the installer.
- Choose "Log in with a MathWorks Account" and click Next.
- Continue through installation prompts.
- When prompted, select the license associated with your installation type and click next.
- For Standalone, select "Campus (Standalone Fac/Staff) – Current".
- For Concurrent, select "Concurrent (Server Fac/Staff) – Current".
- Continue through installation prompts.
- Select the desired toolboxes and click Next.
- If performing concurrent install: when prompted, provide the path to the license file.
- Continue through installation prompts.
Online "Install"
- Go to matlab.mathworks.com.
- Login with your MathWorks account.
- If prompted, agree to the license terms.
- Start using MATLAB Online.
