MatLab

CBS maintains a college-level MATLAB license that may be used on:

  • Any University-owned computer used by CBS faculty, staff, or students
  • Any CBS faculty or staff-owned personal computer
  • CBS Undergraduate Students must use WTS to access MATLAB on their personal computers

Below are four methods to access and use MATLAB. CBS Undergraduate Students cannot install MATLAB on their personally-owned devices and must use WTS.

License and Access Options:

WTS

In partnership with CLA and CFANS, you can access MATLAB through Windows Terminal Services (WTS). Visit our WTS guide to get started.

For use byUndergrads, Faculty, Staff, Graduate Students, Postdocs, Researchers
AdvantagesNo account or installation required
Requirements;
Information
Must obtain access to WTS; Cannot be used without network connectivity

Concurrent

MATLAB software is installed on your computer, but the license is obtained from a license server. To use MATLAB, you must have a network connection on-campus or use VPN during your entire MATLAB session. Note: If you purchased special toolboxes not included in our contract, you should use concurrent licensing.

Concurrent Installation

Before you begin:

In order to install and use MATLAB, you will need to create an account with MathWorks.

  1. Go to www.mathworks.com
  2. Login with your account if you have one, or create a new account. You must use your University of Minnesota email with this account.
  3. Look for "Associate License"  (see either the upper right corner under your login name, or look for an Associate license link on your account page)
  4. Enter the activation key as revealed above.

A "Success" message shows your account is associated with the license.

Download MATLAB installer

  1. Go to www.mathworks.com and select Log in in the upper right corner.
  2. Log in with the MathWorks account you created above. You will see your name in the upper right corner. Click on your name and choose 'My Account.'
  3. You should see a license listed with the label "Concurrent". To start download and installation, select the small down arrow icon on the line for the Concurrent license. If you don’t see a “Concurrent” license listed, see directions above for creating an account and associating a license.
  4. Download the current release (offered by default), or select an earlier release if needed. Be aware that it may take a few weeks after a new release before our license server supports that release.

Install MATLAB

  1. To begin installation, launch the installer you downloaded from MathWorks.
  2. For installation method, select "Log in with a MathWorks Account". Use the account that you created.
  3. The installer you downloaded is a small file that sets up installation options; the products and toolboxes you select to install will be downloaded during installation. Be sure you have a reliable internet connection to download up to 5GB of additional files during installation.

For additional directions for concurrent installation, see z.umn.edu/matlabinstallguide

NOTE: Our MATLAB concurrent license requires a continuous on-campus network connection to use MATLAB or any of its toolboxes. If you have a network connection but are off-campus, you will need to use VPN (Virtual Private Network) to run MATLAB. Information on VPN can be found here: https://it.umn.edu/virtual-private-network-vpn

Standalone Installation

Before you begin:

In order to install and use MATLAB, you will need to create an account with MathWorks.
