Version 6.0 of populus is now Open Source. We have established a GitHub project site for source code management. You can view it here: https://github.com/cbs-rlt/populus for more information.


Please note that we are limited on the support we can provide. Every computer is setup differently and may have a unique configuration or Security setting that could prevent Populus from running. Please try the troubleshooting steps on the Help and Contact page before contacting us. If you would like to see changes or enhancements, or have found an issues/bug, please contact us

You must have Java installed on your computer before you can run Populus.

To get Java please download Java from this website. (Please be aware of Jave licensing requirements or use Open JDK as an alternative: https://openjdk.org:443/

Populus has been tested on macOS, Linux, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. Please ensure .jar files are associated with the Java Runtime Environment (JRE).

macOS users may get the error "App can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer” in order to bypass this error you will need to right-click (or control-click) PopulusAll.jar and click Open and then Open again at the popup box.

Populus software is produced by the University of Minnesota to foster instruction in population biology.  IBM, the University of Minnesota, and the National Science Foundation have underwritten development, and the software is not a commercial venture. Faculty and students at your educational institution may download Populus and use it gratis for non-profit instructional purposes.  You may incorporate links to this site, in nonprofit materials distributed within or beyond your institution.  This is the only venue maintained to provide the current public version of Populus, and you should distribute the link rather than redistributing the software.
