What are informational interviews?
Informational interviews are simply conversations between you and someone whose job interests you. Instead of answering questions like in an interview for a job, you get to ask the questions! Informational interviews can be in person, over a phone or video call, and even sometimes over email (though we recommend having a conversation if possible).
What questions should I ask? What do we talk about?
These conversations are an opportunity to ask all of the questions you wonder about a job, employer, or career path but can’t find answers to online. Ask questions that will help you learn the information you want and need about the career you’re interested in exploring. For example:
- What does your day-to-day look like in your job?
- What advice do you have for a college student interested in getting into this field?
- Are there any important skills or experiences that are helpful for someone to have before applying to an entry-level job in this field?
- What is the hiring process like at your employer?
- And anything that you’re curious about!
Tip! At the end, ask: Is there anyone else you’d recommend I talk with? This is a valuable way to expand your professional network and get connected to another person to do an informational interview with.
How do I prepare?
We recommend learning a bit about the individual’s employer and checking out their LinkedIn profile (if they have one). Coming with questions prepared, like the ones above, can ensure you leave with the information you’re looking for.
Who do I reach out to for an information interview?
You can set up an informational interview with anyone you’d like to learn from who may help you learn about career opportunities or help you better understand careers or fields you are considering. This could include: UMN alumni, faculty, family members/friends, and current coworkers or people you know through off-campus involvement. You can also do informational interviews with other students who have had experiences you’re interested in!
How do I set them up? What resources can I use?
Start by brainstorming if you know anyone you’d like to talk with or if anyone you know may know someone. You can also use the UMN Maroon & Gold Network and LinkedIn to search for CBS and UMN alumni, ask faculty if they have former students they recommend you talk with, and ask other students if they know of anyone (like a coworker) who you could connect with. Then, send an email or LinkedIn invitation introducing yourself and asking to connect for a meeting. Make sure to meet with a CBS career coach for help with identifying individuals for informational interviews, drafting your invitation email message, and preparing for the meeting.
What should I do after we meet?
Similar to a job interview, sending a quick thank you email is a thoughtful courtesy to thank the person for sharing their time and insights with you. You may also want to connect with the individual on LinkedIn to help stay in contact with them, take some notes on the tips and insights you learned, and follow up on any recommendations the individual had for you.
