Scott Lanyon recognized for outstanding service

Ecology, Evolution and Behavior department head and professor receives a 2014 U of M President's Award for Outstanding Service.

Scott Lanyon received a 2014 University of Minnesota President's Award for Outstanding Service. The award recognizes faculty and staff who have gone above and beyond to provide exceptional service. The Ecology, Evolution and Behavior department head and professor has made significant at the departmental, collegiate and University levels.

Lanyon joined the U of M as director of the Bell Museum of Natural History in in 1995 and became head of EEB in 2008. While serving as director of the Bell, he worked to strengthen the biological collections, hired energetic new faculty members to both curate the collections and strengthen the museum’s research program, extended the museum’s connections throughout the University and the community, led the museum through both strategic planning and planning for a new building, and strengthened the private support for the museum. As department head, he has conducted strategic planning, hired new faculty members, worked to protect graduate student support, revised the review process for tenure-track faculty and initiated an external review of the EEB Graduate Program. He also led the Provost’s Special Committee on Graduate Education tasked with identifying opportunities and challenges for the University.
