Dean's note - February 2023

February 20, 2023

As you may know, February is Black History Month and the University is sharing stories of Black students, staff, faculty and alumni to mark the occasion. Included among those profiled is CBS senior Chino Nwakama and recent alum Abygail Andebrhan. Take a moment to check out their stories and explore Black History Month events around campus!

CBS Graduation Reception
In addition to the University-wide conferral ceremony and stage crossings, the college is holding a reception to celebrate our graduating seniors. Staff and faculty are invited to join in the fun May 10 at 5 p.m. in the Great Hall at Coffman Memorial Union. Come help us send off the class of 2023 in true CBS fashion.
RSVP if you plan to attend

UMN DEI Campus Climate Survey
Everyone should have received a link to the inaugural system-wide diversity, equity and inclusion campus climate survey. Please do take a moment to complete the survey. It’s so important that we understand what we are doing well and where we need to improve in order to make the U and the College as inclusive and welcoming as possible. You can read more about the effort

Speaking Science
CBS is among the organizers of the upcoming
Speaking Science science communication conference. The event, which will feature The Atlantic’s Katherine Wu as keynote speaker, includes tracks for graduate students and postdocs, faculty and research staff, and communicators. If you are interested in attending, the college has a limited number of tickets available to distribute on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are interested, contact Stephanie Xenos at sxenos@umn.edu.

With the semester in full swing, I know how intensely busy everyone is. Please know how much your efforts are appreciated. I encourage you to take time for self care even if just a brief walk outside.
