Dean's note - March 2023

A monthly message from the dean.
March 20, 2023

The college recently released its 2022 annual report. It’s an impressive document that reflects the collective energy and effort of the CBS community. The annual report allows us to take stock and provides context and a glimpse of the “big picture” of the many ways we work to achieve our research, education and outreach mission. I encourage you to take a moment to look it over.

For me, the numbers and narrative point to the incredible energy and dedication of people in our community, from our wonderful teaching lab staff to the advisors in Student Services, and our administrative staff, in addition to the students, postdocs and faculty who drive discovery in our labs. That work happens here on campus, at our field stations and in the community as well. We are able to achieve so much thanks to you.

Looking forward
Each spring, the college prepares a compact based on guidelines provided by the University's Budget Office. This document highlights our top priorities for the coming fiscal year. With the likelihood of new leadership this fall, we’re focused on ensuring the college sets up a new dean for success. The priorities outlined in the FY24 CBS Compact include responsible stewardship of the college in anticipation of a new dean, a continued focus on our undergraduate programs and building on the positive momentum in regard to research.

Recognizing our outstanding alums
Nominations for 2023 CBS Alumni Awards are now open and I encourage staff and faculty to participate. Our students go on to do great things and we want to recognize that. I know many of you stay in touch with former students and follow their careers. Please consider taking a moment to submit a nomination (or two!) by the April 21 deadline.
